School Mission:
The mission of the Urban Choice Charter School is to provide Rochester students with a safe, supportive, and intellectually challenging educational environment. The central philosophy is that strong student-teacher relationships are essential to student motivation, engagement, and achievement. This philosophy, in combination with authentic efforts at family involvement, and the effective teaching of a rich, rigorous, and engaging curriculum, will enable students to build a strong foundation for college and career readiness, exceed state achievement standards and defy the demographic destiny of poverty.
Staff Mission:
We, the staff of Urban Choice Charter School, believe that all staff members of our school community should work in an environment that allows them to feel safe, respected and happy. We all deserve to be supported and have our constant efforts to educate and care for our students be valued and appreciated. We are all equally important members of the Urban Choice Charter School team.
We agree to communicate openly, honestly and constructively with each other. We will actively listen to our colleagues and be open to and non-judgmental of the ideas or opinions of others. We will be flexible in our roles, offering and accepting help from those around us. We will be role models for our students by coming to school each day with a positive attitude and creating a culture of respect.
We will ask for help when we need it and accept support from our colleagues. We will be careful to think before we act and share our feelings when we are feeling unhappy or uncomfortable. We will reflect on our feelings and remind ourselves to question how our decisions and actions will help our students succeed.
We agree to use this charter as a guide in our daily work and interactions with colleagues. Acting as a unified team will allow us to achieve the mission of Urban Choice Charter School to provide Rochester students with a safe, supportive and intellectually engaging, educational environment.
Student mission:
We, the 7th and 8th graders of Urban Choice Charter School, commit to creating an environment where all of our classmates feel welcomed, safe, comfortable, respected, cared for, important, appreciated, accepted, supported, acknowledged, protected, trusted, excited, happy, productive, equal, educated and loved. We would like for every student to feel that he or she is somebody special and to never experience discrimination because of differences.
In order to create this environment, we will show others respect and respect ourselves. We will be helpful, open minded, positive, trustworthy, and show tolerance. We will not gossip, fight, or threaten others. We will instead compliment other, welcome them into our groups, encourage them and listen to them. We will not retaliate. We will not just be bystanders, but will stand up for ourselves and for others who are victims of bullying. We will focus on our education, study, learn and teach. We will work as a team and show love.
When we feel uncomfortable, we will not become bullies ourselves. Instead, we will seek our help from our teachers, counselors, and parents. We will stay calm and walk away. We will write down how we feel in a journal. We will communicate to others how they have hurt us, but not choose to hurt them as well.
Working together as a school, we will accomplish great things. We each deserve the opportunity to reach our highest potential and will work as one to create an environment in which this is possible.
